Network Solutions Public Policy

Network Solutions® maintains a separate and distinct organization within the company to proactively address issues related to our customers’ and our company’s interests. The Policy and Business Ethics team serves as Network Solutions’ primary point of contact with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the California-based non-profit organization that accredits domain name registrars and oversees the Domain Name System. As such, we are involved in all domain industry policy development and compliance issues. We also interact with federal and state governments, as well as with a variety of trade associations and advocacy groups. Some examples of the work we do include:

  • Contributing to the long-term sustainability of ICANN’s private sector-led, bottom-up consensus policy development model. We support the ICANN framework because it provides consumers with choices through competitive markets and several ways to address industry-related initiatives. Besides leading ICANN’s Registrar Constituency and actively participating in various task forces and working groups, we also regularly contribute to the debates on such key issues as the joint ICANN-U.S. Department of Commerce agreement (PDF), the introduction of new generic Top Level Domains, and the equitable release of highly desired single-character domain names.
  • Promoting corporate and customer interests to key government officials. This occurs at the federal and state levels, among elected and appointed officials, and across party lines. In some cases we also work through broader coalitions established by the associations we are members of, including the Direct Marketing AssociationSM (DMA), the U.S. Council for International Business (USCIB), and the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC). Some issues we have promoted include a permanent moratorium on Internet taxes (PDF); steps to help protect children online; and working with the Center for Democracy and Technology on privacy rights for .us registrants (PDF).
  • Advocating for customer privacy rights. This includes maintaining InternetPrivacyAdvocate.org, a site that offers our customers useful tips to safeguard their personal information, protect their domain registrations, and reduce the amount of spam received. It is designed to tie-in with other resources available at NetworkSolutions.com.
  • Supporting cyber security and online safety awareness and education. We participate in an array of collaborative efforts including the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), anti-spam and malware data sharing lists such as RegOps, and online child safety initiatives such as Project Online Safety. We also are an official endorser of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the annual initiative by non-profit, government and industry entities to sponsor educational campaigns and events to help increase public awareness about cyber crime threats and ways to stay safe online.
